Washington (CNN) The Justice Department is investigating potential obstruction of justice connected to the ongoing probe of Rep. Matt Gaetz and his alleged sexual relationship with a minor. According to two people familiar with the matter, federal investigators' concerns over efforts to obstruct the probe date back to at least last fall, when the examination of the Florida Republican was not yet public knowledge. (CNN) This needs to be said right up front about the pending Justice Department investigation of Rep. Matt Gaetz: there's still a lot that we don't know. He has steadfastly, even furiously, denied any wrongdoing. But the facts that have emerged -- including new CNN reporting that federal prosecutors are attempting to obtain cooperation from Gaetz's ex-girlfriend -- seem likely to paint a bleak picture for Gaetz moving forward.

Gaetz's onetime pal and political ally Joel Greenberg -- who faces a 33-count federal indictment, charged with crimes ranging from sex trafficking of a minor to bribery to identity theft to stalking -- reportedly is cooperating with federal prosecutors and providing information about Gaetz's conduct, including alleged encounters with women who were given cash or gifts in exchange for sex. (CNN) Federal authorities are looking into whether a 2018 trip to the Bahamas involving Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz and several young women was part of an orchestrated effort to illegally influence Gaetz in the area of medical marijuana, people briefed on the matter told CNN. Prosecutors with the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section are examining whether Gaetz took gifts, including travel and paid escorts, in exchange for political favors, the sources said. As part of an ongoing probe into Gaetz, investigators are examining whether he engaged in a relationship with a girl that began when she was 17. (CNN) Devin Murphy, the legislative director for Rep. Matt Gaetz, has resigned his post, making him the second staffer to leave the Florida congressman's office as the pressure continues to mount surrounding a federal investigation into sex trafficking allegations. A source directly connected to Murphy said he left the job, not specifically because of Gaetz's legal troubles, but because the "media circus" surrounding the Republican made it difficult to accomplish "meaningful congressional work." (CNN) It's been a week for Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz. First came the news that he was considering resigning from Congress for a job in the conservative media world. That was followed almost immediately by reporting that the Justice Department is investigating a possible sexual relationship between Gaetz and a 17-year-old girl. (Gaetz denied the allegation and insisted that the 17-year-old girl "doesn't exist" and that he was the the victim of an "organized criminal extortion.") Then on Thursday night, CNN reported that, unrelated to the DOJ probe, "Gaetz allegedly showed off to other lawmakers photos and videos of nude women he said he had slept with." And there was this late Thursday from The New York Times: "A Justice Department investigation into Representative Matt Gaetz and an indicted Florida politician is focusing on their involvement with multiple women who were recruited online for sex and received cash payments." The report from NBC News said Luke Ball resigned on Friday. Ball had served as Gaetz’ communications director. According to the New York Times, Ball did not release any kind of public statement explaining why he was leaving. Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz has spent nearly $200,000 in taxpayer funds renting an office from a longtime friend, adviser, campaign donor and legal client. Both men said in separate interviews Gaetz paid below market rent for the space — although Gaetz later shifted, saying the rent was “at or below market rate.” House rules explicitly state such arrangements are not allowed. The agreement between Gaetz and Collier Merrill, a Pensacola real estate developer and restaurateur, highlights how a decades-long relationship can become intertwined with a lawmaker’s congressional duties. On top of being Merrill’s tenant, Gaetz attended fundraisers at Merrill’s restaurants, sought his counsel on policy matters and tapped him as a validator for his work in Washington. Gaetz — who represents a conservative swath of the Florida Panhandle — has paid more than $184,000 to Merrill’s Empire Partners LLC to rent the entire sixth-floor in the Seville Tower, a historic building in downtown Pensacola, according to House disbursement records. Gaetz has rented from Merrill since he got to Congress in 2017. House rules state that all leases for district offices must be “at fair market value as the result of a bona fide, arms-length, marketplace transaction. The Lessor and Lessee certify that the parties are not relatives nor have had, or continue to have, a professional or legal relationship (except as a landlord and tenant).” Merrill said in an interview that Gaetz approached him saying he wanted to rent space in his building. Merrill then dispatched his leasing director to give Gaetz’s staff a “range to see what they can get” and the private negotiation yielded a price in the middle. The rental agreement was approved by the House’s Administrative Counsel. Gaetz, through a spokesman, said that he did not feel he needed to disclose his long relationship with Merrill to the House.

Florida Republican Representative Matt Gaetz on Wednesday tweeted photographs of an ethics complaint he filed against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after she publicly destroyed a copy of President Donald Trump's State of the Union address following his speech Tuesday night. Thursday, the Miami-Dade Democratic Party of Florida filed a complaint against Gaetz for "grave misconduct." News of the suit against Gaetz was tweeted by activist Scott Dworkin who, in an echo of Gaetz's tweet, referred to it as breaking news. "Breaking: The Miami-Dade Democratic Party just filed a Florida bar complaint on GOP @RepMattGaetz for 'grave misconduct.'

According to a statement, the complaint was sent to the Florida Bar Association via mail. "In so doing, Miami-Dade Democratic Party has taken action to hold one of President Trump's top defenders accountable for violating legal ethics by risking American's national security to 'grandstand' in Congress," the statement read. Gaetz also attempted to sit in on the deposition of former National Security Council member Fiona Hill in October 2019 but was asked to leave because he did not belong to the committee in charge of receiving Hill's testimony. In the complaint, a copy of which was sent to Newsweek by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party, Gaetz's acts were described as "improper, unprofessional and unethical and were meant only to feed Gaetz's unjustifiable large ego and penchant for grandstanding." "Impeachment proceedings are a legal process leading to a trial, and therefore covered by the Florida bar's rules of conduct," wrote Miami-Dade Democratic Party Chair Steve Simeonidis in the statement. "But Republican Attorney General Bill Barr isn't going to hold a member of his own party responsible. So we must appeal to our state's institutions to restrain this rogue lawyer who has obstructed the impeachment process twice, and generally treats the powers of his elected office like a personal plaything."

During Thursday’s impeachment hearing, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee repeatedly tried to shift the focus from President Donald Trump’s apparent abuse of power to the Bidens — their goal being to establish that Trump had legitimate reasons to try and cajole the Ukrainian government into investigating one of his domestic political foes.

“There is clear evidence of wrongdoing between Hunter Biden, the former Vice President Joe Biden, and the Ukraine and the corporation Burisma,” Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) said early during Thursday’s hearing, despite the fact that there is no such evidence; and even if there was, the US president doesn’t normally personally ask foreign governments to investigate individual Americans. “So the idea that there was a smear [of the Bidens] going on — let’s look at the facts.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) took this effort to a new level when he went out of his way to bring up Hunter Biden’s well-documented substance abuse issues. But his effort backfired when Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) pointed out that Gaetz, who was arrested for driving under the influence in 2008 (the case was later dropped), doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to trying to score points on substance problems.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Sunday said President Trump was acting on "sincere" concerns of corruption during his July 25 phone call with Ukraine.

He also said on ABC's "This Week" that having White House officials testify in the impeachment inquiry would benefit Trump but could set a dangerous precedent.

The Republican member of the House Judiciary Committee told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that he believed Trump acted on his long-held skepticism about foreign aid and worries about corruption in Ukraine as well as about the connection between former Vice President Joe Biden's son and the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

"I think the president was acting on a sincere, longly held view and skepticism of foreign aid," he said. "I think he was acting on concern about Ukraine being the third-most corrupt country in the world."

U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz led more than 30 Republican lawmakers to "crash" the impeachment inquiry hearings against President Donald Trump at the Capitol on Wednesday, causing the hearing to be halted for several hours. The GOP lawmakers were protesting the closed-door nature of the hearings, which are being conducted by the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, and Oversight and Reform committees in a room known as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF, in the basement of the Capitol.

Gaetz had previously tried to sit in on a hearing last week and was kicked out as he was not on one of the three committees conducting the inquiry. Republicans who are on any of the three committees are allowed to attend the impeachment inquiry hearings. On Wednesday, Gaetz organized a press conference that became another attempt to enter the hearings. Close to 30 lawmakers — most of them not on any of the three committees — stood behind Gaetz as he told reporters that the group was going to try to enter the SCIF.

Gaetz previously called a press conference for last week, but it was canceled following the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md. "We're going to try to go in there, and we're going to try to figure out what's going on behalf of the millions of Americans that we represent that want to see this Congress working for them, and not obsessed with attacking a president who we believe has not done anything to deserve impeachment," Gaetz said at press conference he streamed on social media.

Department of Defense official Laura Cooper, who serves as the deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia, was testifying at the time, but the hearing was halted as Republicans entered the room. The protest came a day after Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat to Ukraine, said in his opening statement, according to the Associated Press, that he was "alarmed" Trump was withholding the release of military aid for Ukraine until the country opened an investigation into an energy company that employed former Vice President Joe Biden's son, Hunter.

Matt Gaetz, a Republican from the Florida Panhandle, what the congressman’s unquestioning defense of Donald Trump has brought his district, you will receive a list titled “President Trump Wins for FL-01.” Among the 17 items: “President Trump says Rep. Gaetz is ‘handsome, going places…fantastic’ in Fort Myers, Florida rally.” “President Trump holds rally in Pensacola, FL with Matt Gaetz.”

“President Trump calls Rep. Gaetz ‘an absolute warrior’ in live Fox News interview.” “President Trump endorses Gaetz in the Republican primary calling him ‘one of the finest and most talented people in Congress.’” Flattery in Trumpworld is a two-way street, and Gaetz, 37, has earned a reputation for becoming one of the party’s highest-profile members by cheerleading for the president and emulating his public bullying and trolling. Gaetz seems to spend more time on Fox News than in congressional committee rooms, and when he does legislate, it’s sometimes for show. After Trump mocked the House Intelligence Committee chair, one of his chief antagonists, as “little pencil-­neck Adam Schiff,” Gaetz went on Tucker Carlson’s show to announce a resolution to boot the California Democrat off the committee. Gaetz called it the Preventing Extreme Negli­gence with Classified Information Licenses Act, or PENCIL Act.

The suck-up beat comes with risks for Gaetz: covering for Trump’s lies, contradicting himself, looking bad in history books, getting ratioed on Twitter. In June, a constituent pelted him with an unidentified red beverage. But there are upsides: free rides on Air Force One. Compliments from Melania. Invaluable campaign endorsements in Florida’s most Republican district. And, most important, TV appearances.

“Matt Gaetz is living proof that Veep was less parody and more prophecy,” says Steve Schmidt, a veteran Republican political strategist and a Trump critic. “To some degree, he’s a character in the grandest reality show of all. He exists at the hinge of reality and alternate reality.” Gaetz is often described as Trump’s protégé, someone who’s become a Fox News staple not just by sucking up to the president but by trying to out-Trump Trump with insults hurled at Democrats and anyone else with the temerity to challenge the president. But Gaetz hasn’t simply been copying the president; he was cultivating a Trumplike persona long before anyone considered the possibility of a President Trump. And the two men share more than just a love of playground taunts. Gaetz’s political ascent was also fueled by a rich father who paved his way, and a series of unorthodox financial maneuvers.

The meanest member of Congress hails from a town called Niceville, a sleepy enclave of about 15,000 nestled on Choctaw­hatchee Bay, just off the Gulf of Mexico. When Gaetz was growing up, it was 90 percent white, solidly middle class, and best known for hosting the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival—in honor of the plentiful local fish, not the hairdo. The Gaetzes owned a second home, in the nearby town of Seaside, where The Truman Show was filmed. Gaetz, who has devoted his career to getting on television, spent much of his childhood in a house made famous by a character trying to get off TV.

The Gaetzes were conservative and religious, as was the surrounding community. (Two abortion doctors were murdered in the area during Gaetz’s childhood.) Matt’s mom suffered life-threatening complications while pregnant with his younger sister but opted not to have an abortion and was partially paralyzed as a result.
